Redirect Rain the Right Way — Protect What’s Below the Surface

It’s not just where the rain goes — it’s where it shouldn’t go.
Most homeowners are focused on what comes down from the roof — but forget to think about where that water ends up once it hits the ground. Even with well-installed gutters, water that exits too close to the house can quietly cause major problems: cracked foundations, basement moisture, eroded landscaping, and mold around the home’s base.
At Bravo Company Roofing, we design complete water management systems — from roofline to runoff. That includes making sure your downspouts don’t just drain water — they direct it far enough away to protect everything underneath your home.
What Are Downspout Extensions and Why Are They Important?
A downspout extension is a simple add-on that moves water further away from the foundation of your home. Without one, rainwater exits right at the base of your house, often only inches away — which is exactly where you don’t want it pooling.
Common Types Include:
- Flexible surface extensions that can be repositioned as needed
- Rigid piping that channels water across a lawn or driveway
- Buried drainage systems that direct water to a storm drain, dry well, or landscape bed
Bravo’s approach connects the whole system: roof → gutter → downspout → extension → runoff zone. Because drainage doesn’t stop at the downspout.
What Happens When Water Isn’t Properly Diverted?
We’ve seen firsthand what happens when runoff isn’t managed — and it often starts with signs homeowners overlook.
Water draining too close to the house can lead to:
- Foundation cracks, soil erosion, or structural settling
- Siding and paint damage from splashback
- Moisture in basements, crawl spaces, or around slab edges
- Mold growth at the base of exterior walls
- Displaced mulch, flooded garden beds, or dead landscaping
These problems don’t show up immediately — but once they do, repairs can be expensive. That’s why Bravo always inspects the ground runoff during any roofing or gutter evaluation.
Best Downspout Extension Options for Homeowners
Not every home needs the same type of extension. It depends on your grading, landscaping, roof size, and how much water your home is moving during a storm.
Popular Solutions We Recommend:
- Flexible extensions: cost-effective and ideal for short-term or adjustable drainage
- Underground PVC or corrugated pipe systems: great for long-term, invisible water routing
- Pop-up emitters: release water into the lawn once pressure builds up, then close to prevent debris
- Directional splash guards: useful for controlling where surface runoff hits the soil
We help homeowners select the right setup based on their property, water volume, and future goals for landscaping or outdoor features.
How Bravo Company Roofing Installs Downspout Extensions the Right Way
It’s not just about connecting a pipe and calling it done. Proper installation means understanding how water behaves around your home — and how to move it efficiently and discreetly.
Our Process Includes:
- Mapping out roof drainage zones and calculating runoff volumes
- Evaluating soil slope, foundation grade, and landscaping barriers
- Selecting materials that resist freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and shifting ground
- Anchoring and sealing the connections for long-term performance
- Ensuring water exits in a safe, controlled area that doesn’t erode or flood
We also integrate extensions seamlessly with any gutter or fascia work being done — no mismatched pieces, no shortcuts.
How to Know If You Need a Downspout Extension
Many homeowners assume that if there’s no water in the basement, everything’s fine. But there are subtle warning signs that water isn’t being carried far enough away.
You may need an extension if you notice:
- Consistent pooling or muddy areas near your foundation
- Mulch or landscaping washing out after storms
- Musty smells or visible mildew in your crawl space
- Downspouts that stop just a few inches from the wall
- Gutters that seem to work — but the ground says otherwise
Bravo checks all drainage paths during every roofing or gutter project. If an extension would help, we’ll explain why — and show you exactly where the water should go instead.
One Small Extension, One Big Win for Your Home
Your roof may stop the rain — but your downspout extension decides where it goes next. Don’t leave water management unfinished.
Let Bravo Company Roofing inspect your system and install downspout extensions that protect your foundation, landscaping, and peace of mind — from the roof all the way to the ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of a downspout extension?
A downspout extension directs rainwater away from the base of your home to prevent water damage. Without it, water can pool near the foundation, leading to cracks, erosion, basement moisture, or mold. At Bravo Company Roofing, we install extensions that are tailored to your roof’s runoff and your property’s grading, so water ends up where it belongs — safely away from your home.
How far should downspouts extend from the house?
Ideally, downspouts should discharge water at least 4 to 6 feet away from your foundation. In areas with poor grading or heavy rainfall, even longer extensions may be necessary. Bravo evaluates each home’s layout and slope to ensure extensions are placed at the right distance for maximum protection.
Can I install a downspout extension myself?
While basic extensions can be installed by homeowners, improper placement, poor sealing, or incorrect slope can still cause water to back up or pool in the wrong place. Bravo Company Roofing offers professionally installed systems that are anchored, weather-resistant, and designed to integrate with your full roof drainage system — so you get long-term results, not short-term fixes.
See What Our Customers Say
Read real reviews from Atlanta homeowners and businesses who trust Bravo Company Roofing for their gutter and downspout needs.
Communication at first was rocky but I was thoroughly communicated with by the owner and my project manager throughout after a bit.
They also were able to renegotiate with my insurance on my behalf to secure an entire new roof after they had only offered half which I'm grateful for.
Of note; I was able to pick an upgraded shingle type and the color to better withstand the storms in the future which was easier then I had thought would be.
It looks great and I'm happy with having gone with them.
My husband and I were especially impressed by how genuinely committed they were to helping us and ensuring the job was done right. The team went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and made the entire process smooth and stress-free. The workers who came to fix our roof were not only efficient but also left the area spotless, which we deeply appreciated.
Bravo Roofing delivered excellent service, and their attention to detail and customer care made all the difference. If you’re looking for a company that truly values its customers and takes pride in their work, look no further. We highly recommend them!
Additionally we had them install gutters all around the house. Very pleased with the results.
The most important thing I will say is the communication with them was spot on. Robbie & Brian kept me informed during the whole process, even while I was out of town.
Bravo Company Roofing Review
Jonathan from Bravo Company Roofing came to my house to see if I might need a new roof. Using his UAV, he inspected my roof looking for any type of hail or wind damage. After the inspection, he showed me pictures of damage to my roof. The next step was to have my insurance inspector to come out and determine if the damage suggested a replacement was needed. Jonathan kept me updated via phone on all activity and dates to meet my schedule.
My insurance inspector came out with Jonathan and did determine my roof had enough damage that it needed replacement. Jonathan went through all the steps that would follow to replace my roof. The most important was understanding the contract. Jonathan went over all the details and explain fully so both my wife and I understood the process.
On a date of my choosing, we set up a time to schedule the roof replacement. Jonathan went over what I needed to do before the installation crew came out so no damage would occur to my screens or items in the yard. Jonathan was very patient with us as we picked out a color of shingle we wanted on the roof. I made a few upgrades that I paid extra for to have a roof that will last longer.
Due to the weather, we had to postpone our installation only one day. The crew showed up about 7am and started to work. The meticulously put down plastic tarps to catch the debris as they removed the old shingles and underlaying.
After completing the new roof, they went around and cleaned up the area of nails and debris. I was told they may not get everything, so be sure to make my own inspection. I inspected the yard back and front for three days finding bits and pieces that escaped the cleanup. All in all the crew did a fantastic job! I was very pleased to sign over the last check for the job completion. My roof is awesome and makes my house stand out even more now. I can not thank Jonathan enough for his detailed explanation of the whole process and his excellent communication from start to finish.
If you ever need a new roof, I highly recommend Bravo Company Roofing! Not only will you be pleased with the excellent work they do for your replacement roof, but also the professionalism of how they manage their company and quality of service they provide the customer!
Sincerely,
Steven and Frances Daigle
